• ASSIGNMENT 3: Average Atomic Mass (of an element) vs. Mass Number (of 1 atom of that element)
Choose an element from the periodic table that has an average atomic mass with 1 or more digits after the decimal. Explain the difference between the average atomic mass of YOUR ELEMENT and the mass number of a single atom of YOUR ELEMENT. (This will require a minimum of several sentences). Correct vocab use must include: protons, neutrons, isotopes, mass number, average atomic mass. You will need to research your texts, the Internet, etc. in order to understand and explain this concept.
The minimum supporting images must include:
1. Diagrams of various isotopes of your element
2. A pure sample of your element

  • ASSIGNMENT 2: Classification of Matter Flowchart
1. Login to www.mywebspiration.com and open the "Classification of Matter" file
2. Complete the activity using the directions found when you open the file.
3. Find a method for posting the completed concept map as a new assignment at the top of your wiki page (Note: there is more than one way to do this depending on the computer you are working on)

  • ASSIGNMENT 1: Physical and Chemical Properties and Changes
1. Look at your notes, text, or Internet to find out what these four terms mean: Physical Property, Chemical Property, Physical Change, Chemical Change
2. Find and copy 4 pictures to your : 1 showing a physical property, 1 showing a chemical property, 1 showing a physical change, 1 showing a chemical change.
3. Place the images on your wiki page under the heading "ASSIGNMENT 1: Physical and Chemical Properties and Changes" and include a 1-2 paragraph explanation like my example below.
Note: each image is worth 3 points and each correct sentence is worth 2 points for a total of 20 points.

NOTE: Below is an example to help guide you. However, you must come up with your own new creative idea, images, explanation.

The color of this Monte Carlo is a physical property.

A physical change takes place when the car is painted black. The plastic body of the car is still the same substance after the color is changed. We could even melt that plastic into a liquid, and it would still be the same substance because a phase change is also considered a physical change. See the thing is, as long as the chemical composition remains the same, a chemical change has not occurred.

other physical properties include: size, shape, texture, odor, etc.

Corrosivity is a chemical property of acid rain water.

When acid rain water reacts with certain metals, a chemical change takes place (rusting) and the acid rain + metal forms a new substance (rust). Other chemical properties include: flammability, reactivity, pH balance, etc.

Here is the balanced chemical equation showing that Iron, Oxygen, and Water react to form a new substance....rust. 4Fe + 3O2 + 6H2O ---> 4Fe(OH)3
